Chapter 2

Mourning and New Pains

*Rhoda Point Of View.*

"Father!!! Mother wake up please, let's go home, it's my birthday remember, you always get me a chocolate cake and daddy, you always want me to make a wish, my wish is for us to go home now." I cried looking at my parents lifeless on the stretcher.

"God this is not fair, why me? Why my family? I am too young to lose the precious gift you gave to me? My parents are too good to just die like that, I never got the chance to say goodbye at least, is this what death truly is? Like a wind that blows and takes what it comes for but when the wind is over, what was taken can never be returned."

I fell crying out my eyeballs and wishing all this was just a dream which I will be waking up from soon.

This is no dream but a reality I have to face.

"Rhoda, we need to take you home, so we can start preparing for your parents' funeral." My mom's sister said to me,

"Aunty Imose, please give me just a few more minutes to say some things to my parents."

"Okay fine, but don't kill yourself too much, you are just a kid and the dead can never come back." She said leaving with her five-year-old daughter called Irene.

"Dad, mom, I will miss you so much and I will never forget you both, as I promise, I will grow up to be a beautiful lady and be like you mom, I wish to have your kind heart mom, how you forgive people easily without struggling, how you smile even if you are not happy you don't show it out to the world, I remember when you said, 'Of what good the word sorry is when everyone knows you are sad, it makes them mock you the more and allows the devil to laugh that he won but when you smile over the situation, the devil will feel at lost, everything always ends in joy, if not for everything, my dear Rhoda, be thankful to God you are alive.'"

I wish death never came.

I came out and saw my aunt and her annoying husband talking to my father's lawyer and the only word I heard was, "Their daughter's signature."

I got home and saw that my mom’s sister and her family moved in. Maybe they came to take care of me but still, I was filled with sadness, how can I act on what mom told me when she was still alive.

After taking my bath, I sat on my bed waiting for my door to open with someone giving me a chocolate cake or my mom's sister celebrating my birthday, but it never happened, then I doze off in my sorrows.

*Funeral*

My parents' funeral was carried out as we all put on black and black, their poster was everywhere.

I hated the fact the people who came to sympathise with us were dragging for food, some people were drinking, is this supposed to be a thing of joy or mourning.

The life on stage singer they invited, played and they all danced, spraying his money, what the hell is all these?

After the whole thing, the place my parents were buried, their pictures were carved on it with the year they were born and the year they left this earth.

I dropped the flowers I got for them to make it look beautiful for them and I said to them, "Dad, mom, I hope you are resting at a good place, you gave me two necklaces on my birthday, so please I want you both to help keep this necklace having a key pedal, I don't wish to misplace it and I will always come to check on it and see how you both are faring. I miss you so much and guess what, I passed my exam in school."

"Rhoda over here, your attention is needed." My aunt said,

"Okay aunt." I walked to meet her and she was holding some documents.

"Your parents wanted you to sign this?"

"I will sign it aunty to respect my parents wish," I said smiling innocently not knowing I am making a mistake as a child.

I never knew that everyone who smiles with you or plays with you loves you wholeheartedly.

I took the pen and signed each document and my aunt caressed my hair saying, "Well done child, let me see him off." She said with a smile on her face.

I wanted to open my lollipop to lick when I heard Irene crying. I am a senior to her so I went to her asking her what happened.

"I want sweets."

I laughed inwardly and sacrificed my lollipop by giving it to her.

My mom once told me, "Rhoda always treats your cousin Irene with love, she is also your responsibility.

"And stop being a cry baby okay."

"Thank you, Sister Rhoda," she said, smiling now.

The little things you do can always brighten up someone's mood.

Every Saturday, my parents always give me time to sleep since I won't be going to school. I might even wake by 9 am because that's the only time I get to rest.

On Sunday, we like going to church very early and after staying for different meetings and mostly my mom who likes greeting the full church.

I heard my aunt's voice so loud asking her child, "Where is that useless girl called Rhoda?"

"She is sleeping in her room."

"Who does she think she is? a queen, who will do the chores in this house?"

I heard her footsteps approaching my door but I was too weak to wake up. I am used to sleeping so long on Saturday, maybe my late mom never told her.

Coldwater was poured on my body on my bed and I jumped seeing my aunty looking at me with an evil gaze.

"Aunty good morning ma, what did I do that you poured water on my body?" I asked politely, shaking, I don't like cold water. Even if I want to bathe, I bathe with warm water.

"So you have grown wings to talk to me anyhow you like right? We are now mates? Do you think this is still your parent's house, this is now my husband's house?"

"Aunty I am sorry if you think I was rude but it is not fair, and this house was never owned by you or your husband." I only just told the truth.

"Oh I see, Rhoda I will teach you that a tree that is shorter than an ant cannot shade you, come here you foolish child."

She grabbed me and gave me the beating of my life, as I was crying then I understood the meaning of an adage that says," The fall of a dead leaf is a warning to the green ones."

To be continued.
